Stories from around the kitchen table

My own sister hid the part of the baking soda trick that helped her fit back into the dress she wore to her son’s wedding

And if you tried it too and nothing happened, give me 2 minutes: you probably missed the same detail I did.

Illustrative photograph of a woman seated in a kitchen with a wedding album; a glass, lemon and baking soda are on the counter.

The photo in this post is from the night the wedding album arrived: my glass on the counter, the box of baking soda, and Joanie looking as happy as could be, all while keeping her secret from me.

Two Sisters, Same Routine

Joanie and I are fifteen months apart, and people at church still mix us up. Same laugh. Same bad knee. Same weakness for anything with a flaky crust.

All our lives, I was “the pretty sister.” She never said a word. I thought she didn’t mind.

So when those baking soda videos started showing up on both our phones, of course we tried it together. The same Sunday night, on FaceTime, making plans for a healthier future.

A glass of water. Half a lemon. A spoonful of baking soda. Right before bed, exactly like the video.

Same ingredients. Same recipe. Same bedtime. At least, that’s what I thought.

If any two people were going to get the same results from the same trick, it was us.

Seventeen Nights, Nothing Changed

I followed it exactly for 17 nights.

And nothing happened. Nothing.

I was still standing at the kitchen counter at 9:40 p.m., picking the crust off the pie I’d bought for my grandson’s birthday. Still waking up thinking about breakfast before I’d even opened my eyes. Still hearing it all day long.

The Noise Nobody Talks About

You know the noise I mean. If you don’t, lucky you. If you do, you know exactly.

What’s in the pantry. What’s for dinner. Whether I’ve already eaten too much. Whether tomorrow I’ll be “good.” All day, every day, like a radio nobody can figure out how to turn off.

Try this today: count how many times you think about food between dinner and bedtime. I stopped counting at ten.

Now I know what it’s called: it’s the satiety switch, which turns off after 40.

On the 17th night, I tossed the glass into the sink and told myself what I always do.

Another trick that works for everyone else.

Because I’ve tried everything too. Cutting carbs. Eating soup every day. The app with the little green check marks. Skipping lunch, then eating everything in the kitchen at night. I even looked into the weight-loss injections: a thousand dollars a month, and anyone who stops gains it all back.

I’m not lazy. I’m not weak.

I’ve been doing everything “right” for thirty years.

Joanie didn’t give up.

The Green Dress

Three weeks later, the album from her son’s wedding arrived, and there she was in the green dress. The one that had been hanging at the back of her closet, with the alterations tag still attached.

So I called her to find out what she’d done and why it hadn’t worked for me.

And she said something that night that I haven’t stopped thinking about since.

“I don’t think about food all day anymore.”

I wanted to be happy for her. I was happy for her. I hung up and stood in my kitchen for 20 minutes.

Same face. Same knees. Same recipe. Why her and not me?

The Confession at the Kitchen Sink

Then, the following Sunday, she came to town. While we were drying dishes at my sink, I asked her straight out.

“I need the truth. What are you doing that I’m not?”

She put down the dish towel.

“You’re going to be angry.”

“Why would I be angry?”

She took a while to answer. “Because I knew from the start. I watched the whole video before you did. And I let you do it the wrong way.”

I gripped the glass I was drying so hard that it broke in my hand.

Her eyes filled with tears. “For once in my life, I wanted to be the one everyone noticed.”

She hadn’t even been looking for it. Her grandson had left the full video playing on the tablet while she dried the dishes, and she’d heard the whole thing.

“What you did was the 15-second version,” she said.

The 15-Second Version

It turns out those short videos everyone shares are clips from a much longer video. And the part they cut out is the part that matters.

That is exactly the part they cut, because the full video is 40 minutes long, and nobody shares 40 minutes.

She took my hand and told me everything, right there, with the dishes still in the sink.

The first thing changed what goes into it. One of the three ingredients isn’t what the videos show.

The second changed when to take it. And when she explained why, I understood exactly why my 17 nights had led nowhere.

It was like trying to light the stove with the gas turned off: you hear the click, but there’s no flame.

I was doing the wrong ritual, at the wrong time, and blaming myself for it.

I’m not going to try to explain the rest here, because I’d get the details wrong, and the details are everything.

And no, it doesn’t ask you to give up the foods you love. No gym. No app. No skipping meals. Joanie still eats pie. So do I.

What Changed in One Week

I started again the next morning, the way the full video shows.

I’m not going to pretend I understand it all. All I know is that by the end of that first week, the trips to the counter at 9:40 p.m. had stopped, and the house felt quiet in a way I couldn’t remember ever feeling before.

On the scale, it was 4 pounds. It’s no miracle. But I hadn’t seen the number go down in years.

I slept through the night for the first time in months. Woke up without the bloating. And the jeans I wear to church buttoned up again without my having to hold my breath.

The following Sunday, my grandson looked at me and said, “Grandma, you look different.” He’s 9. Kids don’t lie.

Does This Sound Familiar?

If you tried the baking soda trick and nothing happened…

If you’re the one standing at the counter at night while everyone else is asleep…

If you’ve been doing everything “right” for years and still can’t turn off the noise…

You didn’t fail. You probably did the 15-second version too. Just like me.

Before You Click

I sent the article to my neighbor, Carol. On Sunday, she wrote back: “Read it in 2 minutes. Why isn’t anyone talking about this?”

I’ll leave the link below. In the video presentation, you’ll see:

  • Which of the 3 ingredients the videos swap out.
  • The time of day it works, and why taking it before bed doesn’t help.

Watch it today. Joanie says the full video has already been taken down twice, and every time it comes back, more has been cut out.

Click if you’d like. If not, that’s okay too. Just don’t do the 15-second version again. 👇
